Closet edit, closet detox, closet makeover. Whatever name you apply, we all could use one. I can't think of a better time than now to revamp my closet. Although the past nearly two years of a pandemic and stay at home orders have prevented us from going outside in clothes other than pj's (yes, I've seen people at my local grocery store in their pajamas!), sweats, and workout wear, this time of year is a good time to get organized. My hand is raised for all of it!
If you're still working at home and doing zoom calls, you still want to look your best even if it is just from the waist up! When you look your best, you do your best, right? Looking our best starts with being organized. So what are the steps to getting your closet organized? Generally, with my clients I would ask if they like or love something before deciding to put it in a pile of unwanted items. Big mistake! You can like everything in your closet. That's why you bought it in the first place. Instead, I will be asking 7 questions to get an idea of what to keep and what will be donated, thrown out, or consigned.
Does this fit?
Have I worn this in the last 6 months? 12 months?
Is it likely I will ever wear this again?
Is this currently in style, and/or represent my style?
If this is damaged in any way, will I actually make the effort to get it repaired?
If I was shopping right now, would I buy this?
Do I feel confident when I wear this?
These are honest questions that need honest answers from you. No one can answer them but you. Not even me, your friendly stylist! And since we're are speaking of honesty, let's be real, most people are a little anxious about revealing the true conditions of their closets. I know I was before I started this business. That's why I can relate. Having someone walk into your closet brings plenty of anxiety. But there's no judgment here. Only support in helping to bring life and order so that choosing an outfit for the day or special event won't be so overwhelming and frustrating.
After your closet is organized the way that is convenient for you, whether by color or category, there will be bags or boxes for those items that will be labeled for donations, trash, repairs, or consignment. While I'm thinking about it, let me say a few brief words about hangers..NO MORE WIRE HANGERS! Just kidding. Well, not really! If you must have wire hangers, they should all be hung in one direction. And, quite frankly, felt or velvet non-slip hangers are a good investment for a great looking, well organized closet.
Lastly, I love great smelling scents. Hanging dryer sheets or placing scented sachets in your drawers or shelves keeps your closet smelling fresh. During the pandemic, I had a friend help me create homemade sachets with dried lavender flowers. Another business idea? Maybe not, but it gave me great inspiration to share with my clients.
This is just a brief overview of what is involved in a closet edit. If you'd like to consult with me and explore in greater detail, please book the service at your earliest convenience.
Happy closets, happy life!
